Can medicines affect my oral health

Yes, medications can have side effects on oral health, and the most common is dry mouth. You should always inform your dentist if you are taking medications, even those acquired without prescription.

Here are the medications that cause dry mouth are as follows:

  • Antihistamines
  • Decongestants
  • Analgesics
  • Diuretics
  • Drugs for hypertension
  • Antidepressants

Other medications can cause abnormal bleeding while brushing or flossing, inflammation or ulceration of the tissues, mouth burning, numbness or tingling, movement disorders and taste alteration. If you experience any of these symptoms, see your dentist or doctor.
